Twenty20 World Cup

April 28, 2010

April 30, 2010 is the start of the Twenty20 World Cup of cricket in the West Indies, with the event running until one of the 12 international teams competing becomes 2010 Twenty20 World Cup cricket champions. Most good money is on Australia.

According to oddsmakers over at BetUS, this is how the 12 teams competing are expected to fare against one another:
Australia +300
India +350
South Africa +400
Sri Lanka +450
Pakistan +600
England +700
West Indies +800
New Zealand +800
Bangladesh +4500
Zimbabwe +20000
Ireland +30000
Afghanistan +50000

To go by current points rankings, though, Pakistan is still in the lead with South Africa second, Australia third, Sri Lanka fourth, India fifth, and England sixth.

Events will take place at four different locations: Guyana, St. Lucia and St. Kitts, Nevis, and Barbados (the site of this year’s final).

The women’s Twenty20 World Cup Championship will be running parallel with these matches, the women’s semi-final and final preceding the men’s.

The action starts on April 30 with New Zealand and Sri Lanka facing off at Providence Stadium in Guyana.

Even though the Twenty20 World Cup is normally a biannual event, sudden changes in because of security concerns in Pakistan in 2008 made it so that this year’s ICC Championship Trophy Event will use the Twenty20 World Cup format instead, just 10 months since the International Cricket Council last hosted a Twenty20 World Cup and Pakistan claimed the title.

The structure this year has Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Australia in Group A; Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and Zimbabwe in Group B; South Africa, India, and Afghanistan in Group C, and the West Indies, England, and Ireland in Group D.
