Indy 500 Recap
June 3, 2010
The Indianapolis 500 is now over for another year, and the winner of the 2010 race is Britain’s Dario Franchitti, who drove almost 200 laps without a single mistake, which was incredible due to a crash in the last lap that sent driver Mike Conway skyward and also involved driver Ryan Hunter-Reay. This then let Franchitti drive the last lap with extreme caution, and still notch his 2nd win in this race, his first after taking a two year break to race in the NASCAR series. This victory also means that owner Chip Ganassi wins both the Indy 500 and NASCAR’s Dayton 500 in the same year after NASCAR driver Jamie McMurray won Dayton in February.
Dan Wheldon from England, who was the 2005 Indy 500 winner, finished 2nd, followed closely behind by Marco Andretti for 3rd, Lloyd Dixon from England taking 4th, Scott Dixon, the 2008 Indy 500 winner, finishing in 5th , and the Go Daddy girl Danica Patrick climbing from 23rd to finish 6th. Rounding out the top 10 is Justin Wilson, who came in 7th, with Will Power in 8th. Then the Pole setter and three-time Indy 500 winner Heilo Castroneves had his hopes for a record 4th win dashed by a brutal mistake, when Heilo stalled the car leaving the pits, causing him to pick up 9th. And Alex Tagliani took 10th.
Meanwhile, driver Mike Conway was airlifted to a nearby hospital with a broken leg, expected to make full recovery.
On a lighter note Driver Thomas Scheckter was issued a speeding ticket on Friday. Scheckter was apparently driving in speeds in excess of 100 mph. What a need for speed indeed. Hasn’t anyone told these guys to leave their racing for the tracks?
