IIHF World Championship of Hockey
April 28, 2010
May 7 – 23, 2010 is the 74th annual International Ice Hockey Federation’ IIHF World Championship, taking place in several sites in Germany: the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, SAP Arena in Mannheim, and Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen.
16 teams will compete in the IIHF World Championship starting in 4 groups of 4 teams each competing against the other teams within their group for top ranking leading into the Qualification round.
Group A: Belarus, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Slovakia
Group B: Canada, Latvia, Italy, and Switzerland
Group C: Czech Republic, France, Norway, and Sweden
Group D: Denmakr, Finland, Germany, and the United States
After these Preliminary Rounds, the top 3 teams from groups A & D will compete (the top team in A against the top team in D, the second top in A vs. the second top in D, etc.) at “Group E”, and the top 3 teams from groups B and C will compete in the same way as “Group F”.
After that will come a Relegation Round, in which the four teams in last place will vie for the last two remaining spots in the Quarter Finals, four games in which the four top teams in each of Groups E and F will battle for the four spots in the Semi-finals with the two last-place teams in each group dropping out. That leaves only one more elimination to find the two teams vying for the Gold Medal and the two teams vying for the Bronze.
At the recent 2010 IIHF World U20 Championship, the USA took the gold, beating silver medalists Canada by one game, finishing 6-5. The bronze medal went to Sweden who tromped Switzerland 11 games to 4.
The opening game of the 2010 IIHF World Championship is between last year’s silver medalists the United States taking on this year’s event hosts, Germany.
