F1 Grand Prix Spain

April 28, 2010

It’s less than two weeks away until the next race on the Formula 1 auto racing circuit, the Formula 1 Gran Premio de Espana Telefonica, or the Grand Prix Spain 2010. It’ll take place on May 9 at the Circuit de Catalunya in Catalunya, Spain.

So far the far and away favorite in this race is Jenson Button, but only because he’s won 2 of the only 4 races run so far in this year’s F1 season: the Australia Grand Prix in March and the China Grand Prix in April. Driving for McLaren-Mercedes, Button is in the lead in the standings, with 60 points, while second place right now, Nico Rosberg, is a full 10 points behind him, at 50. But nipping at Rosberg’s heels is the winner of the kick-off race of the season, the Grand Prix Bahrain, Fernando Alonso who takes third, tying with Lewis Hamilton in points at 49 each. Hamilton took second in the recent Grand Prix China and was clocked with the fastest lap, while Rosberg took third in that race and Sebastian Vettel had pole position.

Speaking of whom, also still well in the running with point scores in the 40’s are 5th, 6th, and 7th placers in the standings: Sebastian Vettel, Felipe Massa, and Robert Kubica—in that order.

One dark horse to be on the lookout for is German Adrian Sutil driving for Force India who has qualified in the top 10 at all the races so far this season, and yet has only scored points one time, making fifth in Malaysia. Right now he stands in 9th with 10 points ahead of Michael Schumacher, also with 10 points, but behind Mark Webber holding steady with 28.

The race course will consist of 66 laps around the track with a circuit length of 4.655 km, making for a total race distance of 307.104 km. The lap record at this track was 1:21.670 set by K. Raikkonen in 2008.
