2010 UCI Track Cycling World Championships
March 23, 2010
The 2010 UCI Track Cycling World Championships take place at Copenhagen Ballerup Super Arena in Copenhagen, Denmark on March 24-28, 2010. This year sees the return of the event to Denmark and the Ballerup.
Events in the UCI Track Cycling World Championships include: individual points race, pursuit, keirin, scratchrace, sprint, team sprint, team pursuit, and timetrial. Then there are also events in the UCI Track Cycling World Championships for men only in both madison and omnium.
The last time the championships were held in Denmark, much less the Ballerup, was in 2002. Denmark is the choice spot for these events as it has a long history of cycling success, including a string of Olympic medals and World Championships victories. The Denmark team pursuit cycling team won the silver at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The first Track World Championships were held in Chicago, Illinois in 1893. And over the course of 100 years since then amateurs and professionals have competed separately, but ever since 1993, the format switched to open races in which both groups have been racing side by side. All riders are still chosen by the cycling federation of their respective nation.
Winners of UCI Track Cycling World Championship events receive from the international cycling federation, a gold medal along with a white jersey adorned with rainbow-style bands. Second place winners receive silver medals and third place winners receive bronze medals.
The UCI Track Cycling World Championships is organized by the Danish Cycling Federation, the same organization that hosted two UCI Track World Cups in 2008 and 2009.
