2000 Guineas 2010

April 19, 2010

The 2000 Guineas race for 2010 is coming up on May 2 at its usual spot on the Rowly Mile (long known as “The Course of Champions”) at Newmarket Racecourse as part of the weekend-long 2010 Stan James Guineas Festival, May 1 – 2, 2010.

The 2000 Guineas is the oldest race of the five British Classic horse races. Eligible horses are 3-year-old thoroughbred colts. For fillies, there’s the other part of the 2010 StanJames.com Guineas Festival, the 1000 Guineas.. The 2000 Guineas 2009 winner was Sea the Stars, who after a flourishing few months following that success, has since been retired.

The favorite for the 2010 title right now is St Nicholas Abbey, who showed his stuff in last season’s Group One Racing Post Trophy, taking second place for this opening colts Classic from Elusive Pimpernel, and taking off to a great head start this season with the Craven Stakes title.

Other early buzz has been heard about Canford Cliffs, winner of the 2009 Group Two, Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, beating out second placer Xtension by 6 lengths, and remaining unbeaten after three starts. In his Group One effort, though, he trailed Arcano, winner of the Group Two July Stakes on the July Course at Newmarket, for third.

The results of the 2000 Guineas 2010 for colts and 1000 Guineas 2010 for fillies will say a lot about what’s to come for the other big races of this season coming up – The Investec Derby, The Investec Oaks and Ladbrokes St. Leger.
